Over 110 sprinters raced for victory in an annual competition hosted by Track Academy by Connie Henry in Willesden at the weekend.
The Indoor Sprint Challenge took place at the Willesden Sports Centre in Donnington Road, with 113 competitors battling it out in two rounds of 60m and one round of 60m hurdles. Cheering the participants on were Brent mayor Cllr Bhagwanji Chohan and Tony Jarrett, a Track Academy coach who is a former GB 110m hurdler.
With the challenge certified by British Athletics, the fastest male was Gal Arad, an Under 20 from Track Academy who ran a time of 6.97 seconds. Fellow Under 20, Salome Japal from Enfield and Haringey, took the women’s first place in 7.74 seconds. Harrow’s Under 20 Brittney Wiggan was the fastest in the 60m hurdles, running the race in 9.57 seconds. In total, 81 personal bests were achieved throughout the day.
Track Academy founder Connie Henry explained that the competitors had been seeded prior to their heats, meaning that they were sprinting alongside those of a similar ability. She said: “With the two rounds of 60m, the participants each had two goes to execute a good race. This helped the majority to secure personal bests which was fantastic to see.
“The event was huge fun with the crowd cheering on the athletes the whole way.”The academy offers its thanks to Luke Smallwood from Justiming for providing electronic timing, photo finish and an LED scoreboard, Spencer Walker for being the starter, and John Husbands and Mick Lyons for their roles as marksmen. Support was also provided by athletes, staff and coaches from Track Academy, and coaches from Thames Valley Harriers.
Track Academy is a registered charity which uses sport for social change among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Based at the Willesden Sports Centre in Donnington Road, academy members are given inspiration to succeed both on and off the track.
Alongside athletics coaching, they attend education sessions to help them gain qualifications, encouraging them to carve out fulfilling lives away from negative influences. The academy is holding a special invitational event on August 15, just after the World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships take place in London.
